The Benefits of Taking Risks
When you take risks, you enhance your confidence, build new skills, and get more out of life. But taking risks does not mean jumping off a cliff without knowing what’s below. Risk-taking to you might be something as simple as speaking up during meetings, telling your roommate to treat you better, or letting a friend know they’ve let you down.
Overcome Fear
When you take more risks, your mind and body get used to handling the feelings often associated with fear – and you can turn it into positive action. You can shift those fear feelings into confidence.
Break Through Perceived Limits
Most of us have limits that have been manufactured for us throughout our lives that have nothing to do with reality. Maybe someone told you when you were in 8th grade you were terrible at math. Or for some reason, you think you are not naturally “good” at something. Often, these are limits that don’t even exist.
Learn New Skills
When you take a risk, you will learn something new. For example, if you want to become better at public speaking and more comfortable in front of an audience, you might choose to take a course or practice and get better at it.
Uncover More Opportunity
The more risks you take, the more opportunities that will come your way. For example, if you publicly speak even though you are terrified, what will it lead to? Will you meet people or might it lead to more opportunities? You may not even realize what the opportunity is right away, but it will lead to something – even if you’re not perfect.
Boost Your Self-Confidence
Nothing boosts self-confidence like success. When you do more, you have more opportunities to experience success. More than likely, you’re going to get more success taking more risk, which will make you feel more confident.
As you discover the benefits of risk-taking, you’ll simply open more doors, experience more success, and become more courageous. After all, experience is what helps you overcome fear.
At The Arise Society, we help young adults that are struggling with anxiety, depression, gaming and other motivational issues. We provide personalized academic, therapeutic, and social support in a real-world setting, which gives our students the skills to reach their fullest potential. A key aspect of our social support comes from the friendships and significant time spent between our program professionals and students. Fun activities, outings, and shared experiences provide a basis of understanding for our students’ social needs and opportunities for improvement.
